If you’ve been following along on my Instagram lately, you may have noticed that there’s been a LOT going on- all in a good way of course! Looking back on the last chance I had to blog, (June 1st!!!) I can only think of one word to describe life lately: busy.
Okay, sometimes I cringe when I use that word- I promise, my use of busy isn’t an avoidance issue! I think the phrase “I’m too busy to do this” can be an easy crutch to fall back on. In reality, yes, I probably could have blogged, but honestly, when ever I did/do have a spare moment, I spend it by turning off my brain and entering into relax mode. Something I’ve learned about myself is that I produce really shitty work when I’m stressed, overwhelmed, or just mentally/physically exhausted, so taking the time to stay balanced over writing a blog post at 1 AM is sometimes worth it, you know?
Anyway, toward the end of April through now, I’ve had so many photography shoots (so thankful for my awesome clients!) and have traveled internationally twice (Canada and Italy!) I’m still contributing over at The Everygirl as the food and drink editor, and try to contribute some freelance writing whenever I can!
I think the biggest change to my schedule though is that I’ve started a full-time job as a food stylist assistant and shopper for Mittera Group, an intelligent creative company that specializes in creative direction, video and photography studios and food styling and art direction for large-scale clients and companies. I applied for this job back at the end of May because I wanted to get into the professional food styling industry, get on-the-job experience in the food styling industry and learn from some of the best food stylists, photographers and creative directors in the field. I am having SO MUCH FUN with this new job and I really hope to be a professional food stylist someday and also apply what I learn every day to my freelance styling and photography jobs. Guys, I basically get to play with food all day and it’s so much fun.
So, here’s a glimpse of what I’ve been up to the last couple months:
Rehearsal Dinner Styled Shoot with Me and Billy
Me and Billy, an eatery located in Downtown Davenport, Iowa, is essentially a “bar with great food.” I’ve worked with Me and Billy a couple times before– each time, I am continuously impressed with the concepts for their food and gathering-related styled shoots. It’s always a pleasure being able to work with them! The concept for this styled shoot revolved around showcasing their party room styled in a rehearsal dinner setting. Here’s a glimpse:
R Cartwright Design Interior Design Studio Tour
When Jillian first approached me about photographing a studio tour and head shots for Des Moines interior designer Rebecca Cartwright, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to photograph anything interior design related. You can see more images from the studio tour here.
The Everygirl Home Tour Photography
I first photographed part of Kristen‘s home for her One King’s Lane feature– so back in the end of April, I headed back to photograph the rest of her home for a feature on The Everygirl (coming soon!)
Portraits for Little Nymph in the Woods
Sara first approached me about my photography services after finding and loving my work on Instagram. She’s a blogger and jewelry designer who needed some updated head shots and images for her blog and business and I was so happy to help provide my services to her.
Wedding Second Shooting for Val Marlene Photography
I had the opportunity to second shoot two weddings for Val Marlene Photography in May and June! I can’t share June’s wedding yet, but here’s a glimpse of some bridal portraits from May’s wedding:
Wanderlust Retail Styling and Imagery
Jen, owner of Wanderlust, had a need for images of products her boutique sold as well as some interior shots of her boutique for use on her website and social media channels! This was such a fun shoot to do but also allowed me to put on my styling hat in a few ways.
I photographed a maternity session for Randall and Nick in Davenport, Iowa toward the end of June. Can’t wait to welcome their baby girl in August by photographing their newborn session!
Cocktail Photography for Saucey
The last couple months I’ve delved into recipe development and cocktail photography and styling for Saucey, an app-based website where you can order liquor/beer and have it arrive to you within 20-40 minutes! Right now, the services are only available in major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago and soon to be Dallas. This is a REALLY fun gig and I’m enjoying it!
Writing/Other Freelance Work:
• In case you missed it, I wrote a #locallyinspired guide focusing on Des Moines’s East Village for Domino.
• I’ve been so happy to be a part of The Everygirl team now for over a year!! Here are my latest articles.
• Speaking of The Everygirl, I answered some questions about what flipping a house is really like.
• I’ve also been doing freelance stock and email/social media marketing photography for Be Well by Dr. Frank Lipman.
As I scroll down this post, I can’t help but feel so thankful for all of the photography opportunities I’ve had these last couple months, as well as being blessed to have kind, understanding and amazing clients. Next on the list for updates, my trips to Canada and Italy!
