Hello! Thanks so much for stopping by. I like to keep things pretty informal and personal around here, so here’s a little about me!
I am Cassandra Monroe, a 29 year old editorial photographer based in the midwest city of Des Moines, Iowa. While I spend my days working full time as a food stylist assistant, I spend the rest of my time working on my latest photography projects.
Why I started blogging:
I was actually in the military for seven years and during my last deployment, I was lucky to be stationed somewhere where service members had access to a kitchen. At the time, I was writing a weekly cooking column in the base newspaper and wanted a way to share my images, recipes and daily life with the civilian world I missed back home (other than posting the images to Facebook.) So one night, I started my WordPress-based blog! I had NO idea what I was doing, other than wanting to share my recipes and pictures, and I had now idea I’d still be blogging two years later.
What was your job in the military?
I was a Public Affairs Sergeant (PAO) in the Army National Guard (MOS: 46Q) So basically, a military journalist and photographer. In a nut shell, I interviewed my subjects, wrote articles, photographed story-telling images to go with my articles and marketed my stories though contacting publishers/civilian newspaper editors as well as on social media. As a PAO, I also experienced working with and escorting civilian media, and designing magazines and newsletters.
Will you share some of your military photography?
Yes! I’ve dedicated a whole section to it here.
Where have you lived and traveled to?
I’ve lived in Canada (I’m part Canadian!) Indianapolis and New York City but recently moved back to my home state of Iowa. I’ve been to South Korea, The Middle East and Cuba with the military.
Why did you choose your name as your ‘blog name’ ?
To be completely honest with you, using my name as my blog title and web address seemed like the most natural thing for me to do. No blog title ever seemed like a good fit, and after recently reevaluating my blog and brand, that statement still fits. My goal for my blog is to keep it personal, almost like telling my story ( all while adding some delicious recipes, updates on my life and sharing projects I hope that inspire.)
What do you write about?
When I first started blogging, I got so caught up in ‘what was pinable’ and writing articles that brought ‘traffic to your blog’ and I soon began to forget the original reason why I got into blogging in the first place: to share my images, recipes and daily life with those who were willing to read and follow along. After reflecting on this, I finally found the direction I wanted to go in and I’m just as in love with blogging as I was on day one.
So, what do I write about? I write about personal subjects that do happen in my life, because I’m human and I feel like the best way to connect with you (my reader!) is to keep it 100. I also photograph and share tried and true recipes, my latest interior design conquests and inspiration, as well as my latest projects and photography sessions. If you’ve been a long-time reader (thank you!) then you’ll notice a few new categories that reflect the direction I’m going in naturally in life. Isn’t that the beauty of putting yourself out there- documenting all of life’s natural changes, ups and downs?
What do you like to photograph?
I do photograph people! I love photographing moments between couples, newlyweds or between a parent and infant. I strive to photograph these lifestyle elements complete with my style and aesthetic. I also love working with other fashion and lifestyle bloggers by photographing them! (shoot me an email if you’re interested in working with me) I think my absolute favorite subject to photograph though is editorial work- so food photography, styled shoots/look books, products and interiors. I love taking the time to set up a shot just right, and arranging all of the details that go into that.
What do you do in your spare time?
I’m actually heading back to school in January for interior design, so between that, my blog and photography, I stay pretty busy! But normally, I’m a huge proponent of Netflix, chillin’ with no makeup on, and baking/drinking a glass of red wine- that’s literally what the perfect night for me sounds like! I also love exploring new parts of my city, and trying new restaurants. Lately, I’ve been doing a little furniture restoration on the side too!

If you have any questions, concerns or just want to chat please don’t hesitate to send me an email, tweet me, or say hello on Facebook. Also, I get questions about serving in the military ALL THE TIME- if you’re thinking about joining, please don’t hesitate to email me. Although I’m not in anymore, I don’t mind having my brain picked over my time served, especially if you’re debating a huge decision like that!
